  • MyHappy.Horse has been created to get rid of feeding confusion! 

    It harnesses the collective knowledge of equine nutrition science from the literature, plus the experience of Dr Nerida McGilchrist (formerly Richards), a PhD in equine nutrition and more than two and a half decades of hands-on experience, to help you get feeding right without having to know a lot about nutrition yourself… to keep your horses truly healthy, happy and performing at their best.

    Our real why is simply we love horses and we want horses to be healthy and happy, either through optimized nutrition with MyHappy.Horse or via our charitable initiatives, where a portion of our income goes to helping working horses, donkeys and mules live better lives in developing countries. 

    We see MyHappy.Horse as our chance to help leave the world a better place for our beautiful equines who give us so much.

  • Excellent question! MyHappy.Horse is a virtual equine nutritionist. 

    It asks a LOT of questions to properly get to know your horse. And then, it uses that knowledge to recommend a diet using feeds and supplements that have been carefully selected for quality, efficacy and reliability.

    That’s right - the MyHappy.Horse virtual nutritionist will actually give you product recommendations so you know exactly what feeds and supplements (in what amounts) will meet your horse’s unique needs. 

    And it will check in with you in the following weeks and months to help you adjust the diet as your horse and its circumstances may change.

    Of course, if you prefer to create your own diets, then you can subscribe to MyHappy.Horse to build or adjust a diet using any ingredient your heart (or your horse) desires!

    Other tools like FeedXL are nutrition calculators who do the grunt work of all the math in a diet for you (which is endlessly useful!). 

    However with these tools you still need to have a lot of knowledge about ingredients and about how to adjust a diet appropriately to tailor it specifically for your horse. 

    So while they help, these tools can also add to the confusion unless you are a nutrition junkie and love to read and learn about feeding horses.

    MyHappy.Horse aims to remove confusion and simplify the entire process of diet analysis for you so both you and your horse can be happy!

    The free version of MyHappy.Horse will recommend specific diets if that is what you would like it to do! 

    MyHappy.Horse has a carefully selected ‘Dream Team’ of feeds, supplements and straights (straights are things like oats, oils, stabilised rice bran or sugarbeet pulp) that it is ‘allowed’ to use in your horse’s diet.

    Based on the information you give MyHappy.Horse about your horse (e.g. the standard stuff like their bodyweight, current activity, pasture and hay details) as well as goals like you’d like them to achieve (e.g. to gain weight or control their energy levels when ridden or that you’d like to focus on improving gut health) MyHappy.Horse will then recommend a specific diet, that is customised just for them.

    If you are a horse owner who loves to create your own diets, from scratch for your horses, then you can subscribe to MyHappy.Horse and you can tinker away using any ingredient you choose!!

  • MyHappy.Horse asks you LOTS of questions for narrowing down which products will best suit your horse, including ingredients you want to avoid and what your feeding budget is. So we hope that in a majority of cases, the diet recommended will fit like a glove.

    However, if you don’t want to use one of the products it recommends, you have the option to subscribe to MyHappy.Horse and substitute in the product you would prefer or create an entire diet from scratch, which I know at least some of you will want to do! 

    And if you choose to do this, MyHappy.Horse can help you balance the diet once you have chosen the ingredients you like.

I wrestled for a long time with whether MyHappy.Horse should recommend specific diets, until one day I realised horseowners want someone who knows what they are doing, to tell them which products are great and would be an excellent fit for their horse. 

Plus having a professional nutritionist create diets for you shortcuts the confusion and the possibility of getting it wrong when you don’t quite have all the knowledge you need to make the very best choices.

When it really became clear to me that MyHappy.Horse should recommend diets was when I went to buy oil for my very old (circa 1960s) tractor ‘Betty’. There are so many oils and I have no idea which one would suit Betty best. So when she needs oil for this or that, I just ask… and the sales assistant in the store tells me. I buy that one and Betty and I go on our merry way. 

BUT imagine if I asked the sales assistant and they gave me a 10 page brochure on oils, told me to read it and after that I would know all I needed to know to make the right choice, because they didn’t want to bias my decision with their advice.

Aiyai, two things… I wouldn’t have the time (or interest if I am honest, sorry Betty!) to read that much information AND even if I did read it, I am quite sure I still wouldn’t feel confident enough to make the decision myself because I don’t understand the technical jargon. 

I just want someone who knows what they are talking about to tell me… and that was my lightbulb moment. Many horse owners are the same… hence the free version of MyHappy.Horse ‘just tells you’ what to feed! And it uses a LOT of science and a whole bunch of experience to figure out what is best for your individual horse

    Our first charity we have chosen to support is Egypt Equine Aid. Their Facebook page will show you some of the incredible work these incredible humans do!

    We have chosen this charity because it is Australian (like Nerida) but in Egypt where Nerida’s Mum was born and lived until she was 21 before immigrating to Australia with her family in the 1960’s. And the equines there really need all the help they can get!! Anyone who has travelled to Egypt can attest to this!

    Through this program and others we hope to support in future, we help provide financial resources so that proper nutrition, veterinary care, and improved working conditions can be given for equines in desperate need.

    In building this tool, our founder, Dr Nerida, really wanted to make using MyHappy.Horse (almost) as good as having a real-life PhD nutritionist create a diet for you. So she went through the process of figuring out all the questions she would ask a horse owner in real life. And then developed ways to capture that same information so that MyHappy.Horse could use it to put together beautifully customised diets.

    And the cool thing is, the questions are asked in a way that makes them easy (and we hope fun!) to answer, making the process of figuring out what is best to feed your horse enjoyable instead of confusing.

  • Not yet… but you definitely will be able to! It is a feature high on the priority list once we get version 1 released.

  • The free version of MyHappy.Horse uses the most recent (2007) National Research Council (NRC) nutrient requirement calculations.

    In the subscribed version you will be able to choose between NRC and Dr Nerida’s custom equations that take into account more recent research and her decades of experience.Plus INRA nutrient requirements will be available in the future!

  • While not fully built yet, the Logbook is a place you can keep your horses feeding and health history as well as keep track of appointments and dates for when vaccinations, fecal egg counts, worming or other routine management procedures like hoof care and dentistry are required.

    This feature was born out of necessity to solve Nerida’s own problem of not knowing when her horses had been vaccinated/wormed/teeth done and when they were due.

    The Logbook also keeps track of all the photos you add to your horse’s profile of their hoof condition, coat condition, body conditions score as well as their pasture and hay, so you can look back over years of history at the tap of a button!

    Once this feature is finished, as well as record keeping, the logbook will also help you with recommendations for wormers and vaccines.

    Use MyHappy.Horse whenever you are questioning whether your horse is being fed the right thing for their current situation or when you need to change their diet for any reason.

    MyHappy.Horse will also prompt you to check your horse’s diet with changing seasons and will check in with you to see if we are achieving any goals you have set.

    But, unlike most apps, we have no desire to keep you in our app! We want you to come in, add the information or get the information you need and then get out so you can be off your device and present in life and with your horse. 

    There are no dopamine promoting pings or dings, no points, or streaks or anything addictive. It is just there to serve you and your horse whenever you need it.

    Be aware however that we take no responsibility if you get addicted to creating diets for horses… there is a slight risk of this happening! (laughing emoji)

    The free version of MyHappy.Horse provides you with customised diets using Sponsored Products that have been invited to be a part of the MyHappy.Horse sponsored product team. 

    The companies who manufacture these products pay to have them included in MyHappy.Horse which then allows us to provide MyHappy.Horse to you as a horse owner, completely free 

    You can also choose to use the subscribed version of MyHappy.Horse which allows you to choose and use any feed/supplement ingredients you like in your horses’ diets.

    Additional horses can be purchased as a one-off in-app payment and get Lifetime Membership. Their diets are still free if you are using the free version of MyHappy.Horse.
